This is a collection of original sculpture images and accompanying poems covering a wide range of topics, from literature and science, to art and history, to experience and emotion. The physical art forms and their verbal accompaniments are derivatives of the human head, its insides and outs. The sculptures are built with clay, kiln-fired, then brightly painted with acrylics, each one unique and one-of-a-kind. The poems rhyme because rhymes are a delight to produce and speak. The sculptures have been displayed in various local art shows and exhibits, always a few at a time. This book satisfies the artist/author's long-time desire to create a "traveling gallery," where the pieces can at last convey their existence with their poems and in the larger context of each other's company. The book is intended to stand on its own, as such, but it also serves as an "owner's manual" to accompany each of the sculptures as they continue to make their way out into the world.

erratic ecstatic et cetera sculptures and poems by Darla Graff Thompson Darla Graff Thompson 9781449908645 Books Reviews
"We have artists with no scientific knowledge and scientists with no
artistic knowledge and both with no spiritual sense of gravity at all,
and the result is not just bad, it is ghastly.
The time for real reunification of art and technology is really long
overdue."
- Robert M. Persig "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"
Darla Graff Thompson's book *is* the perfect combining of Art and Science and Literature and Spirituality.
Extremely moving and lovely.
This book represents a unique art form, made possible because the sculpture artist is also the poet. Viewed from the artistic perspective, the poetry exquisitely complements the sculpture by providing an unprecedented view of the actual thoughts and intents that gave rise to the figure. Viewed from the poetic perspective, the sculpture endows the verse with an unprecedented physical representation of the mental picture driving the poem. Together these aspects provide the reader with the feeling that they have somehow participated in the artistic process. The meanings and feelings are easily internalized and a reader with similar experiences will find that they share things in common with the author/artist.
In addition to multifaceted and many-layered expression, this book illustrates the author's rich exposure to a wide variety of art, history, literature, and science. Works such as "entropy" and "roman soldier" and "oh sunflower!" illustrate a set of experiences not often encountered in a single individual in these days of twitter, reality TV shows, and actors parading as politicians. It is comforting to know that our society does still contain true renaissance men and women.
This book is stunning. You can't take your eyes off of the images.
John Updike said the below quote and it will prepare you for this compelling visual feast.
“The refusal to rest content, the willingness to risk excess on behalf of one’s obsessions, is what distinguishes artists from entertainers, and what makes some artists adventurers on behalf of us all.” John Updike
