This book humorously chronicles the adventures and misadventures of a middle-aged guy from Chicago who cashes in his chips and moves to a so-called 'tropical island paradise'. There he holes up in a coconut wood, palm-thatched bungalow along the idyllic shores of an island in the Gulf of Siam. Please see web-site for synopsis, reviews and excerpts morganmcfinn.com

In my dotage I have often given thought to writing a book, just for posterity's sake. With that thought in mind, it perturbs me no end to read books like Out of the Loop by Morgan McFinn, books in which every page jumps out at you with hilariously funny jokes, clever witticisms, and intellectual references to literature and poetry, all marinated in alcohol. It is so annoying because I was planning on using all those jokes, which I'm sure would have occurred to me eventually (they are all so obvious, now that I read them in McFinn's book ... they were just on the tip of my tongue ... or pen ... or something), in my future writing. Now all the funny jokes have already been used up, and there is nothing left for me to write. Very disappointing. Guess I'll just have another margarita and lay out in my hammock instead.

Ever heard the expression, "Live the dream"? This is the reality of the city daydreamers fantasy life. A wonderful and insightful read.
Wonderful
If you enjoy satirist story telling then Out of the Loop is a refreshing read. Mr. McFinn brings his travels and characters alive to such an extent I felt like I was sitting there with them (usually in a bar) waiting for someone to bring me a refill or lazing in the tropical breeze. Occasionally there is a brief dip in the mood but he doesn't let you dwell on it, I like that in a humorist. I would read more by this author.
The book began well; however, this was not for me as it contains vulgar language. Other readers might enjoy it.
A bit hard to know what to make of this one. The writing is good, readable and smooth. It borders on funny, but not side-splitting, and certainly feels labored at times. Some of the ideas are worth thinking about. Would more of us benefit by being less driven? Probably, but not from withdrawing completely or depending so much on alcohol and cigarettes to pass the time. After a while the incidents feel a bit repetitive, but it's a chance to see how others live in case one can't imagine. Not a lot of deep stuff, as another reviewer stated.
McFinn is the public name of Don McCoy, a Jesuit-educated Chicago native who, as he says chucked his six figure job, his house, and his Midwest life to fulfill his dream of being an author in a far warmer place. So he moved to Samui island off the east coast of Thailand, a resort hotspot. His subtitle, "Scenes from Samui and other Seascapes" tells it all. These are the self-indulgent musings of a well-read middle age man who mostly lazes at a resort where he watches others come and go, does some travel writing, hits on native and tourist girls, drinks more than a bit, smokes some dope (but not much) and spends considerable time contemplating the life around him. He is a good wordsmith and the short chapters fly by. If he had a more interesting topic than himself, (as enviable as his lifestyle is) he could probably be a successful travel writer. He listed P.G Wodehouse among his many influences and a few of the chapters read like some of the master's work. I thought I saw more of style of S.J. Perelman and his travelogues in S.E. Asia in the 1940's and 1950's...but with more four letter words and an awareness of that which he left behind in the American Midwest including a touch of catholic guilt. It is an easy and harmless read
McFinn is likable and his writing is smooth. The background story is interesting enough to keep you reading and his observations of the community of Americans and Western Europeans living in a sleepy corner of Southeast Asia are sharp and amusing.

Don't expect anything profound. He's no social worker or do-gooder. Basically he just seems to be trying to get by, get a cold beer, and get a girl. He pays for the beer and sometimes for the women. This is pretty much his contribution to the well-being of the locals. But an old Jesuit school boy can't completely ignore his conscience, so there are some touching moments when he seems overwhelmed by the sadness of a people struggling against poverty and corruption. DEFINITELY worth reading.
