After a decade-long stay in a psychiatric hospital, Stuart finds himself confronted with the challenges of trying to live a normal life. Moving from one nightmare into another, he is unwittingly tangled up in the affairs of the supernatural when he finds a young woman on his doorstep.

Meanwhile, Genny escapes the clutches of her creator and is suddenly alone in a big, uncaring world that's none too accepting of a girl made of reanimated flesh. Struggling to survive, she meets Stuart, a young man fighting the monsters inside him whose kindness still manages to shine.

Can these two unlikely companions survive being hunted...and, perhaps, find love?

Well this was an interesting read. I really wasn't sure what to expect going into this, which made it that much better. The opening chapter made me think of Frankenstine's story line with his creations in Penny Dreadful. It went from that to something of a love story and turned into...well, I'm not going to ruin anything. Genesis is a dark, creepy, sweet, funny, and, most importantly, unique read. It reminds me of exactly why the indie author scene is just so much better than trad pub writers. Can't wait to read more.

Genesis The Genesis Trilogy Book 1 eBook Jane Reventlov Reviews

Let's face it - supernatural teen romance has become as omnipresent as the common cold. You can't turn a corner without finding a supernatural teen romance novel. "Oh no," you might think. "I don't want to read another mediocre addition to this dumpster fire of a genre." Well, friend, you couldn't be more wrong when it comes to Genesis.

The focus of the narrative is split between two protagonists, Genny and Stuart. Unlike many stories that split their focus like this, both characters are riveting from the moment they appear. They're complex, well-developed, and *messed up in the head*; it's that last one that makes Reventlov's novel stand out from the crowd. These are characters who have been abused. Characters who constantly struggle with the impressions their experiences have left upon them. They are, in their own words, "broken." Genny can't speak or write. Stuart suppresses violent fits of rage. Both were mistreated and damaged by others.

But they keep pushing forward. They show at every step that their experiences are *not* who they are, and those experiences don't keep them from living fulfilling lives. And (spoilers) that's a theme that's woven throughout the entire novel. By the end you realize that everyone is damaged by their experiences, and they don't need to be "perfect" to succeed. That's what I love most about Genesis - it's a mirror for real life, where normal people are messed up, mentally ill, and have no idea what they're doing. You won't find a boring-yet-somehow-the-perfect-princess character on a single page.

The plot itself is basically what you would expect from the genre, insofar as there's a romance involved, but it has enough interesting twists to keep your attention and leave you wanting more. The secondary characters only make this feeling stronger. I want more of them! I want to know what happens! Which is a wonderful thing for the first book in a trilogy to do. The writing doesn't "dumb itself down" for a teen audience, either, and that's always nice. So many new writers these days leave a lot to be desired on the grammar and consistency fronts, but Reventlov clearly knows how to write.

Overall, this is a fantastic introduction to a promising new series. I can't wait to read the next book!

(In the interest of full disclosure, I was provided a free copy of this book for review purposes. And it knocked my socks off.)
Content notes rape, abuse, murder

The characters are likeable, the story is an interesting and different take on an old classic, and the ending leaves the door open for more unique stories. Such a good read!
Jane Reventlov delivers the most astonishing book I've read in years! "Genesis" is a supernatural story about Stuart, a young man with (figurative) monsters living inside his head that falls for a real life monster, Genny, who is a reanimated assemblage of human body parts, and has problems of her own.

Now, it takes a lot to surprise me, and hold my attention, but this book did it! It is bold and haunting and deeply rewarding - and the writer is brilliant! I'm putting "Genesis" on my permanent list of books to highly recommend!
An adoreable love story disguised as a supernatural teen drama; thats what you're in for with the first book of the Genesis Trilogy. Author Jane Reventlov presents you with a handful of characters and fleshes them out over the course of the book making the fantastical seem commonplace and even the starkest villian sympathetic. The point of view switches between the two main characters from chapter to chapter and even if you find yourself favoring one over the other, seeing your favorite through the other's perspective simply makes you fall in love with them even harder. I for one can't wait for more adventures with Genny, Stuart and their strange new friends.
